The traditional Dragon Boat Festival is coming. We will have two and a half days off to enjoy this holiday.
Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Double Fifth, is a traditional and statutory holiday inChina. And it was recognized as a public holiday in mainlandChinain 2008. Based on Chinese calendar, the festival occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar, so it is also called the Double Fifth. Folks inTaiwan,Singapore, andMalaysiaalso celebrate this festival.
The festival commemorates the death of an ancient poet, Qu Yuan of the Warring States Period. Qu Yuan committed suicide by drowning himself in theMiluoRiveron the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. The local people dropped sticky rice triangles wrapped in bamboo leaves into the river to feed him and also paddled out on boats to scare fish away or to retrieve his body. So the celebrations on this day include eating rice dumplings, drinking realgar wine and racing dragon boats. Rice dumplings with beans, succade, chestnut, pickles, meat, ham and salty egg are all very delicious and popular.

The holiday time for Dragon Boat Festival is from June 22 afternoon to June 24, 2.5 days in total, among which June 23 (Saturday) and June 24 morning (Sunday morning) these two general holidays are transferred to June 24 (Sunday) and June 22 afternoon (Friday afternoon), June 23 (Saturday) for national legal holiday, paid vacation. On June 25 (Monday) we will come back and set to normal work.
